European Stocks Fall More Than 1%

The STOXX 50 fell 1.4% and the STOXX 600 dropped 1.3% on Friday, as the tech-led sell-off and broader equity rout that began in the US in the previous session spread first to Asia and then to Europe. Concerns that the US might tighten regulation of the AI sector following the Democrats’ decisive election victory weighed heavily on technology shares and the broader AI trade before spilling over into other sectors, leaving most markets in negative territory. Among the notable decliners were Bayer (-2.8%), BASF (-2.1%), AXA (-1.9%), Allianz (-1.8%) and Inditex (-1.7%). The technology sector, however, proved comparatively resilient, posting the smallest losses: ASML Holding inched up 0.1%, while Infineon eased just 0.1%. Over the week, the STOXX 50 rose 1.9% and the STOXX 600 gained 1.3%.
