Global yuan transaction volumes surge amid trade expansion and geopolitical uncertainty

Global demand for yuan-denominated settlements continues to rise, with average daily transaction volumes climbing to 830 billion yuan ($122 billion) in June 2026 from roughly 680 billion yuan ($100.7 billion) in 2025, according to China Daily, citing DBS Bank and data from China's cross-border interbank payment system, CIPS. This stems from deepening commercial ties between Chinese firms and counterparts across Asia.

The yuan's internationalization has gained further traction amid shifts in global energy markets. With the Middle East crisis reshaping payment flows, oil settlements are increasingly moving away from the traditional dollar zone toward the Chinese currency. According to Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, nations are being forced to seek more reliable and secure payment instruments, with a growing preference for transactions in national currencies.
