Apple Inc. (AAPL) has issued a global alert to iPhone users across 98 countries, warning them of potential spyware threats. This marks the second instance this year, following a similar alert sent in April to users in 92 nations.
The warning, directed at those believed to be targeted, states: "Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID -xxx-." Apple stressed the gravity of the threat and urged users to take the notification seriously.
While Apple refrained from disclosing specific details about the recent spyware wave, including the affected countries, reports indicate users in India have received the alert. The company emphasized the sensitive nature of its threat identification methods and warned that sharing further details could aid attackers in evading detection, as reported by TechCrunch.
Spyware incidents targeting iPhones are on the rise, with NSO Group's Pegasus being a notable example. Apple claims its Lockdown Mode can effectively counteract spyware, though it may affect the device's regular functionality.
Users are advised to be alert for signs of spyware, such as slowed performance or unfamiliar apps on their devices. Rebooting the device may temporarily disrupt spyware operations. Furthermore, users should ensure their iPhone runs the latest iOS software by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update to manually download and install updates.
