South Korean Shares Rebound Amid Tech Tariff Relief

On Monday, the KOSPI index experienced a 0.9% increase, climbing to 2,453 points, marking a recovery from the previous week's declines. This positive shift in investor sentiment was prompted by a significant policy change from the administration of US President Donald Trump. During the weekend, the US Customs and Border Protection agency announced exemptions from extensive reciprocal tariffs for certain electronic devices, including smartphones and laptops. This exemption served as a favorable development for South Korea, a key exporter of these items, by mitigating concerns over escalating technology costs. Consequently, technology stocks saw a notable boost, with Samsung Electronics advancing 1.5%, SK Hynix appreciating by 1%, and LG Electronics rising 1.2%. In parallel, battery stocks also experienced growth, with LG Energy Solution increasing by 1%, Samsung SDI climbing 1.5%, and SK Innovation edging up by 0.4%.
