Brazil Retail Sales End Four-Month Slide

In August 2025, Brazil's retail sales experienced a modest increase of 0.2% from July, ending a four-month downward trend and aligning with market forecasts. Of the eight retail categories analyzed, five showed positive growth. Leading the gains were office, IT, and communication equipment, which surged by 4.9%, followed by textiles, clothing, and footwear at 1.0%, and pharmaceuticals, medical, and personal care items increasing by 0.7%. Sales in furniture and household appliances, as well as supermarkets, food, beverages, and tobacco, both recorded a 0.4% rise. However, there were declines in the sectors of books, newspapers, and stationery, which fell by 2.1%, fuels and lubricants, down by 0.6%, and other personal and household items, which decreased by 0.5%. In the broader retail category, which encompasses vehicles, motorcycles, auto parts, construction materials, and wholesale food and beverages, sales saw a monthly increase of 0.9%. On a year-over-year basis, retail sales experienced a growth of 0.4%, marking the fifth successive annual increase.
