In September 2025, household spending in Australia saw a modest increase of 0.2% from the previous month, which had been essentially stagnant. Notably, spending on food rose by 0.6% from August's mere 0.1% increase, while health-related expenditures climbed 0.7%, up from 0.1% the prior month. Additionally, expenditures on furnishings rebounded by 0.4% following a 0.3% decline, and spending on recreation jumped by 1.1% after experiencing a 1.1% decrease. Conversely, spending dipped for alcoholic beverages, recording a drop of 0.8%, though this was a slight improvement from a previous decline of 1.1%. Transport expenditure also declined by 0.4%, in contrast to the previous month's 0.6% rise. Spending on hotels, cafes, and restaurants decreased by 0.3%, following a flat result, and there was a slight contraction in miscellaneous goods and services by 0.1%, as opposed to August's 0.6% increase. Regionally, New South Wales posted a 0.8% growth, South Australia 0.6%, and Western Australia 0.5%, whereas Queensland reported stagnation after a previous decrease. Victoria experienced a spending decline of 0.3%, Tasmania fell by 0.1%, and the Australian Capital Territory saw a 2.4% drop. On an annual basis, overall household spending increased by 5.1%, a slight uptick from August's annual growth rate of 4.9%.
