Dutch Retail Sales Growth at 3-Month Low

Retail sales in the Netherlands experienced a modest increase of 3.8% in September 2025 compared to the same month last year, slightly down from a revised gain of 3.9% in August. This represents the most subdued growth in retail activity since June, primarily due to a slower rise in non-food product sales, which edged up by 3.7% compared to 3.8% in August. Notably, drugstores saw reduced growth at 2.1% from 3.2%, and the DIY, kitchen, and flooring segment growth shrank to 0.2% from 0.7%. Furthermore, there was a downturn in the trade of shoes and leather goods, which contracted by 3.9% from a previous growth of 0.7%, and recreational items also saw a decline of 1.8% compared to a previous increase of 5.5%. Conversely, there was an acceleration in the growth of food product sales, which climbed by 4.1% compared to 4% in the previous month. Supermarkets experienced slightly higher sales growth at 4.8%, up from 4.7%, while specialty stores saw a reduced decline of 0.2% against 0.3%. On a monthly basis, after adjustments for seasonal variations, retail sales increased by 0.3% in September, maintaining the same pace as recorded in the previous month.
