On Wednesday, the S&P/NZX 50 concluded at 13,548, remaining largely unchanged during the final session of the year. Trading activity was subdued due to the upcoming New Year, resulting in limited market movements. Earlier in the day, the index had experienced a slight decline, influenced by losses on Wall Street the previous night. Performance across various sectors was mixed, with the energy and consumer durables sectors driving gains, while the technology and industrial sectors exerted downward pressure on the index. Companies such as Fisher & Paykel Healthcare (+0.27%), Meridian Energy (+0.90%), Auckland International Airport (+0.60%), and Fonterra Co-operative Group (+0.51%) recorded significant gains. However, these were largely counterbalanced by declines in Infratil (-2.38%), Contact Energy (-0.43%), MainFreight (-0.23%), and EBOS Group (-0.47%). Meanwhile, Mercury NZ, Genesis Energy, and Precinct Property NZ saw no change in their share prices during the session.
