Retail sales in Switzerland experienced a 2.9% year-on-year growth in December 2025, surpassing market expectations of a 2.5% rise and improving upon a revised November gain of 1.7%. This figure represents the most robust retail sector growth since June, primarily due to a recovery in food, beverages, and tobacco sales, which saw an increase of 1.3% compared to a 1.5% decline in November. Turnover continued to climb for non-food items excluding fuel, showing a 5.2% increase compared to 5.3% previously, with notable growth in the sales of information and communication technology equipment, rising sharply to 18.1% from 12.5%, and in other household goods, such as textiles, DIY products, and furniture, which grew by 8.3% from 3%. Overall retail trade, excluding fuel stations, accelerated to a 3.3% increase from 1.9% in the prior month. Conversely, fuel retail sales saw a decline of 1.6% from a previous increase of 0.8%, while sales growth through stalls, markets, mail order, and online channels slowed significantly to 0.6% from 6.8%. Seasonally adjusted, retail sales rose by 1% in December, rebounding from a 0.1% decrease in the previous period.
