Greece Posts Biggest Trade Deficit in Over 3 Years

In December 2025, Greece's trade deficit expanded modestly to EUR 3.6 billion, compared to a revised EUR 3.5 billion in December of the previous year. This marked the most significant trade gap since November 2022, predominantly due to imports outpacing exports. Imports saw a year-on-year increase of 1.5%, reaching EUR 7.7 billion. This surge was largely fueled by a 9.1% increase in purchases from the European Union, which offset a 7.9% decrease in imports from non-EU countries. Conversely, exports rose by 0.7% to achieve EUR 4.1 billion, bolstered by an 11.8% increase in sales to the EU, despite a decline of 11.5% in shipments to other countries. Over the course of 2025, Greece's annual trade deficit decreased to EUR 33.5 billion, down from EUR 35.6 billion in 2024, as exports contracted by 2.8%, a lesser decline than the 4.1% drop in imports.
