New Zealand Equities Gain Ground

New Zealand’s benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index advanced 0.5% to close at 13,514 on Tuesday, rebounding from a subdued prior session. The move higher tracked Wall Street’s recovery on Monday, as US technology stocks clawed back some of their recent losses. Sentiment was further lifted by a rally across Asian markets, which supported export-oriented firms and underpinned broader regional gains.

At the sector level, health technology, consumer non-durables, technology, and distribution services all finished in positive territory. Among the standout performers on the bourse were Third Age Health (+2.1%), Fletcher Building (+1.9%), Fisher & Paykel (+1.7%), Port of Tauranga (+1.5%), and Mainfreight (+1.2%).

Looking ahead, investors are turning their attention to China’s inflation figures—crucial for New Zealand given China is its largest trading partner. The data, due Wednesday morning, are expected to show consumer price growth easing to 0.3% from December’s three-month high of 0.8%, and could provide fresh direction for market sentiment.
