Senegal Inflation Rate at 8-Month Low

Senegal’s annual inflation rate dropped sharply to 0.4% in January 2026, its lowest level in eight months and down from 2.8% in December. The slowdown was mainly driven by a decline in food and non-alcoholic beverage prices, which fell by 0.5% after having increased by 4.5% previously.

Price pressures eased across most other major categories as well, including:

  • Housing and utilities: 0.4% (vs. 1.2% previously)
  • Transport: 0.7% (vs. 1.4%)
  • Furnishings: 1.9% (vs. 2.5%)
  • Restaurants and hotels: 2.1% (vs. 3.0%)
  • Alcoholic beverages and tobacco: 13.4% (vs. 17.2%)
  • Health: 1.3% (vs. 1.5%)
  • Recreation and culture: 1.0% (vs. 1.6%)

Meanwhile, inflation for clothing and footwear was 0.6%, while education costs accelerated, with prices rising 1.0% after being flat in the previous month. Deflation in the communication sector also moderated, with prices declining by 0.7% compared with a 1.7% drop in December.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell for the third consecutive month, decreasing by 1.3%.
