Canadian Investors Trim Foreign Securities Purchases in January

Canadian demand for foreign securities eased at the start of 2026, as investors scaled back purchases in January after a strong December.

According to the latest data updated on 18 March 2026, Canadians bought CAD 11.390 billion in foreign securities in January 2026, down from CAD 13.060 billion in December 2025. The January figure marks a moderation in cross-border investment following the previous month’s higher level of activity.

While Canadians remain net buyers of foreign assets, the pullback suggests a more cautious stance from investors after the year-end surge, potentially reflecting portfolio rebalancing or shifting market conditions at the turn of the year.
