France Industry Confidence Returns Below Average

France’s overall manufacturing business climate index declined to 99 in March 2026 from 102 in February, slipping below both its long‑term average and the market consensus of 100. Past production fell sharply to –4 (from 3 in February), while overall order books deteriorated further to –19 (from –17) and foreign order books dropped to –14 (from –8), underscoring weakening demand.

Personal production expectations softened to 8 (from 10), and general production prospects worsened to –9 (from –6). Finished‑goods inventories rose to 14 (from 9), pointing to slower sales, while economic uncertainty remained high at 31 (from 32).

Labor market indicators showed a slight improvement, with the expected workforce size returning to neutral (from –2). At the same time, expected selling prices rose to 9 (from 5), suggesting mounting inflationary pressures. Performance across subsectors was mixed: food manufacturing showed a modest rebound; machinery and equipment were broadly stable; whereas transport equipment and other manufacturing segments remained subdued.
