US Private Sector Job Growth Holds Steady in Late April

US private employers added an average of 33,000 jobs per week in the four weeks ending April 25, 2026, according to the ADP Research Institute, up slightly from the prior period’s average weekly gain of 30,250. The figures suggest that job growth remained steady in the second half of April. ADP’s latest monthly report showed that US private-sector payrolls increased by a net 109,000 positions in April—the strongest monthly gain since January 2025—following downward revisions to previous months’ data. Overall, the numbers remain consistent with what the Federal Reserve has characterized as a "low-hire, low-fire" labor market, in which employers are largely avoiding layoffs but have sharply curtailed hiring amid slower labor force growth driven in part by reduced immigration.
