Poland Retail Sales Growth Slows in April

Retail sales in Poland rose by 1.3% year-on-year in April 2026, falling short of market expectations for a 3% increase and slowing sharply from the 8.7% growth recorded in March. This was the weakest annual expansion since October 2024, reflecting pronounced declines in several categories: textiles, clothing, and footwear (-9.5% vs +13.6% in March); newspapers, books, and other sales in specialized stores (-5.9% vs +1.1%); and food, beverages, and tobacco products (-5.8% vs +4.3%).

Growth in turnover also eased markedly for motor vehicles, motorcycles, and parts (+0.8% vs +7.7%); furniture, radio, TV, and household appliances (+1% vs +7.9%); and the “other” category (+5.5% vs +15.1%). By contrast, sales of solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels gained momentum, accelerating to 25.6% year-on-year from 16.2% in the previous month.

On a monthly basis, retail sales declined by 0.8% in April, reversing an 18.1% surge in March. Cumulatively, retail activity in the year to date was 3.4% higher than in the corresponding period a year earlier.
