Mexico’s unemployment rate stood at 2.5% in April 2026, unchanged from a year earlier and below market expectations of 2.7%. The number of unemployed people fell by 135 thousand to 1.5 million, while employment increased by 704 thousand to 60.6 million. The economically active population expanded by 873 thousand to 42.9 million, lifting the participation rate to 59.1%.
Among those employed, 41.6 million (68.6%) were salaried workers, and 13.4 million (22.1%) were self-employed. By sector, services accounted for 26.8 million jobs (44.2%), followed by trade with 11.7 million (19.3%), manufacturing with 10 million (16.4%), agriculture with 6.1 million (10.1%), and construction with 5.2 million (8.6%).
Within the unemployed population, 10.9% had not completed secondary education, while 89.1% had attained higher levels of education. The majority were between 25 and 44 years old (45.1%), followed by those aged 15 to 24 (34.3%). On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate declined to 2.6% from 2.8% in the previous month.
