Japan Forex Reserves at 10-Month Low

Japan’s foreign exchange reserves fell by USD 77.11 billion in May 2026, declining to USD 1.31 trillion from USD 1.38 trillion in April and marking the lowest level since July of the previous year.

Foreign currency reserves decreased to USD 1.09 trillion, comprising USD 931.68 billion in securities and USD 162.24 billion in deposits. Of these deposits, USD 161.80 billion was held with foreign central banks and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), while deposits with banks headquartered in Japan amounted to USD 410 million.

Japan’s reserve position at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was USD 11.51 billion, and its holdings of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) were valued at USD 60.89 billion. Gold reserves stood at USD 123.65 billion.

Other reserve assets came to USD 15.91 billion, and other foreign currency assets totaled USD 34.50 billion.
