Canada Imports Hit Record High in April

Canada’s imports inched up 0.3% month over month to a record high of C$72.4 billion in April 2026, with increases observed in 6 of the 11 product sections. Imports of basic and industrial chemical, plastic, and rubber products surged 16.9%, making the largest contribution to the overall gain. Purchases of lubricants and other petroleum refinery products jumped 49.0%, primarily reflecting higher imports of crude oil diluents from the United States. Imports of electronic and electrical equipment and parts rose 4.2%, while imports of computers and computer peripherals climbed 13.2% to a new record, supported by increased shipments of processing units from Ireland for use in data centres. These advances were partially offset by a 12.9% decrease in imports of metal and non-metallic mineral products, mainly due to a 27.5% drop in purchases of unwrought gold, silver, platinum-group metals, and their alloys.
