Indonesia Car Sales Rise 14% in May

New car sales in Indonesia rose 14.0% year-on-year to 69,219 units in May 2026, following a sharp 55.0% jump in April. This marked the second consecutive month of expansion, although the pace of growth slowed amid ongoing price pressures. The Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) remains concerned about the weakening rupiah, warning that a prolonged depreciation could drive up production and import costs.

Over the first five months of 2026, car sales increased 12.8% compared with the same period in 2025, reaching 359,015 units. Gaikindo has set a target for domestic new car sales of 850,000 units in 2026, which would represent a 5.8% rise from the 2025 total of 803,687 units.

On a month-on-month basis, however, wholesale car sales declined 14.3% from April’s 80,776 units. In contrast, retail new car sales climbed 16.8% from the previous month, reaching 71,890 units.
