Australia’s MI Inflation Expectations Edge Lower in June, Hinting at Gradual Price Relief

Australia’s consumer inflation expectations eased slightly in June, offering a tentative sign of moderating price pressures. The Melbourne Institute (MI) Inflation Expectations indicator slipped to 5.5% in June 2026 from 5.6% in May 2026.

The marginal decline suggests that households’ views on future inflation are stabilising after a period of elevated expectations. While still high by historical standards, the move down in June may be viewed by markets and policymakers as a small but welcome indication that inflation psychology is not accelerating further.

The data, updated on 11 June 2026, will be closely watched by investors assessing the Reserve Bank of Australia’s scope for future policy moves, as inflation expectations are a key gauge of how firmly price pressures are embedded in the economy.
