The UK GfK Consumer Confidence Index was unchanged at -23 in June 2026, coming in slightly better than market expectations of -24 but flat compared with May. Beneath this steady headline reading, however, confidence is eroding amid heightened political uncertainty, according to GfK Consumer Insights Director Neil Bellamy. Sentiment among 16- to 29-year-olds dropped sharply by 11 points to -2, its weakest level in two years. Households also became more downbeat about their personal finances over the past 12 months, with that measure falling three points to -10, while expectations for personal finances over the coming year remained muted at -2. Intentions to make major purchases were unchanged at -20, matching the lowest level since January 2025 and pointing to ongoing caution around discretionary spending. The survey further indicated that households’ assessment of the economy over the past year deteriorated again, although expectations for the next 12 months showed a modest improvement.
