Hungary Current Account Surplus Smallest in 5 Years

Hungary’s current account recorded a surplus of EUR 0.25 billion in the first quarter of 2026, below market expectations of EUR 0.4 billion and almost five times smaller than the EUR 1.18 billion surplus posted in the same period a year earlier. This was also the smallest surplus since the first quarter of 2021, largely reflecting a EUR 0.47 billion deficit in the goods account, which contrasted with a EUR 0.82 billion surplus a year before. By contrast, the services surplus widened slightly to EUR 2.17 billion from EUR 2.1 billion. At the same time, the primary income deficit narrowed to EUR 0.97 billion from EUR 1.15 billion, while the secondary income shortfall decreased to EUR 0.47 billion from EUR 0.6 billion a year earlier.
