German Retail Sales Rebound in May, Posting 1.8% Annual Gain

Germany’s retail sector showed a solid recovery in May 2026, with sales rising 1.8% year-over-year, according to data updated on 30 June 2026. The improvement marks a clear turnaround from April 2026, when retail sales had fallen 0.6% compared with the same month a year earlier.

The year-over-year comparison measures how retail activity in a given month stacks up against the same month in the previous year. In April, consumers were still pulling back, resulting in a negative reading. By May, however, retailers saw a positive shift, suggesting an uptick in consumer spending momentum across Germany.

The move from a 0.6% annual decline in April to a 1.8% annual increase in May indicates a notable strengthening in demand within just one month. While further data will be needed to confirm a sustained trend, May’s figures offer an encouraging signal for Germany’s consumer-driven activity during the second quarter of 2026.
