The Chicago Business Barometer slipped to 56.7 in June 2026 from 62.7 in May. The decline was largely due to softer new orders—which, despite easing, remained in expansion territory for a second straight month—and a slowdown in production that nearly erased the prior month’s gains. These drags were partly offset by an increase in supplier deliveries, indicating longer lead times tied to the Middle East conflict, along with rises in order backlogs and employment. At the same time, prices paid ticked higher, reflecting increased oil and metal prices.
