UK Construction PMI Inches Higher in June but Remains Deep in Contraction

The UK construction sector showed a marginal improvement in June, though activity remained firmly in contraction territory, according to the latest S&P Global Construction PMI data. The index edged up to 38.4 in June 2026 from 38.2 in May 2026, indicating a slightly slower pace of decline but still well below the 50 mark that separates expansion from contraction.

The small uptick suggests that while the sector’s downturn may be easing somewhat, construction activity continues to face significant headwinds. Readings below 40 typically signal a steep reduction in output, pointing to ongoing weakness across building, civil engineering, and related services.

The June 2026 figures, updated on 06 July 2026, will be closely watched by investors and policymakers for signs of whether the sector is nearing a turning point or settling into a prolonged period of subdued activity.
