The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks shipping rates for vessels carrying dry bulk commodities, broke a six-session winning streak on Wednesday, slipping 4 points to 2,871, weighed down by weakness in the larger vessel segment. The capesize index, reflecting rates for ships that typically haul 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, fell 0.8% to 4,480 after six straight days of gains. By contrast, the panamax index, which measures rates for vessels carrying about 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, rose 0.7% to 2,245, while the supramax index added 0.6% to reach 1,686.
