TSX Futures Edge Higher on Energy Strength

Futures linked to TSX stocks inched up to a fresh record on Wednesday, buoyed by a constructive outlook for the energy sector. Crude prices advanced as tensions in the Middle East intensified following joint U.S.-Saudi strikes in Iraq, providing further support to energy names.

Investors also digested a slate of earnings from mining and energy companies. Cenovus reported higher second-quarter revenue and profit, underpinned by firmer oil prices. Results from Agnico Eagle, Alamos Gold, Ivanhoe Mines, and Athabasca Oil are scheduled for release after the closing bell.

Markets are additionally focused on the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policy decision later in the day. While the Fed is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged, investors are watching for any dissenting votes in favor of a hike, which would highlight divisions within the FOMC.

Canadian government bond yields moved higher ahead of the announcement, mirroring the rebound in oil prices and a pickup in inflation concerns, weighing on financial stocks.
