Yen Bears Deepen Their Bets as CFTC Data Shows Larger Net Short Positions

Speculative traders have increased their bearish bets on the Japanese yen, according to the latest Commitments of Traders data released by the CFTC on 31 July 2026. Net speculative positions in JPY fell further into negative territory, widening from -152.1K to -163.4K.

The move signals a strengthening consensus among market participants that the yen may continue to face downward pressure. A larger negative reading reflects an expansion in net short positions, suggesting that traders are positioning for continued weakness in Japan’s currency against major counterparts. Investors will be watching upcoming monetary policy signals and macroeconomic releases from Japan for clues on whether this trend in speculative positioning will persist.
