Hong Kong Retail Sales at 11-Month Low

Hong Kong’s retail sales grew 2.3% year-on-year in June 2026, down from 4.8% in May and marking the weakest expansion since July 2025. The deceleration reflected softer growth across most major categories, including clothing, footwear and allied products (0.2% vs 2.3% in May), consumer durable goods (6.2% vs 9.6%), jewellery, watches and clocks, and valuable gifts (7.4% vs 10.7%), as well as other consumer goods (4.3% vs 7.9%).

Department store sales swung back into decline, falling 4.4% after an 8.7% increase in May. By contrast, sales of food, alcoholic drinks and tobacco returned to growth (2% vs -1.5%), while contractions narrowed for supermarkets (-0.6% vs -1.1%) and fuels (-28.4% vs -28.7%).

On a month-on-month basis, retail sales dropped 6.8%, reversing a 7.3% gain in May, which had been a seven-month high.
