Japan’s leading economic index, which tracks the outlook for economic activity over the coming months using indicators such as job offers and consumer sentiment, came in at 116.4 in June 2026, unchanged from May’s revised reading, according to preliminary data. The index remained at its highest level since July 2021, underpinned by the government’s record fiscal budget, which featured broad measures to ease cost-of-living pressures and emergency energy support to mitigate the impact of the Middle East conflict.
At the same time, the unemployment rate held at 2.5% in June, matching its lowest level since July 2025 and indicating a resilient labor market, even as overall employment slipped to a three-month low. Consumer confidence also strengthened, rising to a five-month high on the back of improved optimism about employment prospects and income growth.
