China Foreign Exchange Reserves Expand

China’s official foreign exchange reserves, managed by the People’s Bank of China, increased to the equivalent of $3.419 trillion in July 2026, up from $3.416 trillion in June. The figure matched market expectations and remained close to the record high of $3.442 trillion reached two weeks earlier. The increase was broadly in line with the depreciation of the US dollar on the last trading day of July, driven largely by dollar-asset sales from foreign institutions following the Federal Reserve’s policy decision and a coordinated Japan–US intervention to support the yen. Over the same period, China’s gold reserves rose to 76.08 million troy ounces, compared with 75.44 million troy ounces in the previous month.
