Rupiah Retreats on Weak Domestic Data, BI Continuity in Focus

The Indonesian rupiah weakened toward IDR 17,810 per U.S. dollar on Tuesday, pulling back from a near seven-week high and erasing gains from the previous two sessions. The currency came under pressure following soft domestic data, as retail sales fell for a third consecutive month in July and consumer confidence dropped to a 15‑month low.

Downside moves were partly limited by expectations of policy continuity at Bank Indonesia after acting Governor Destry Damayanti was put forward as the sole candidate to lead the central bank. Lawmakers are scheduled to reconvene later this week for the 2027 budget presentation ahead of Independence Day, and her confirmation is widely expected to be smooth.

The central bank is expected to maintain its emphasis on rupiah stability and inflation control, while supporting economic growth where conditions permit. At the same time, the U.S. dollar index held steady as investors assessed the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook ahead of key inflation data, following a weaker‑than‑anticipated U.S. jobs report for July.
