Malaysia Retail Sales Growth Slows in June

Retail sales in Malaysia increased by 6.6% year-on-year in June 2026, easing from a 7.2% expansion in May. The slowdown was driven by softer growth in several categories, including retail sales at non-specialised stores (7.0% vs 8.2% in May), sales of other household equipment in specialised stores (3.2% vs 3.4%), automotive fuel in specialised stores (10.8% vs 12.8%), and food, beverages, and tobacco in specialised stores (6.6% vs 7.2%).

In contrast, some segments recorded faster growth, notably sales of other goods in specialised stores (7.0% vs 6.7%) and information and communication equipment in specialised stores (4.7% vs 3.5%). On a month-on-month basis, retail sales inched up 0.2% in June, following a 1.3% increase in the previous month.

Elsewhere in the trade sector, growth in wholesale trade also moderated (12.4% vs 18.4%), while sales of motor vehicles posted a strong rebound, rising 14.9% after a 2.3% decline in the prior month.
