Romania’s GDP Contraction Eases in Q2 2026, Points to Tentative Stabilization

Romania’s economy showed signs of moderating decline in the second quarter of 2026, as the year-over-year drop in GDP narrowed to -0.4%, from a -1.2% contraction recorded in the first quarter of 2026. The data, updated on 14 August 2026, indicate that while output is still shrinking compared with the same period a year earlier, the pace of contraction has slowed.

Both readings are measured on a year-over-year basis, comparing each quarter’s performance with the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The improvement from the first to the second quarter suggests that the worst of the downturn may be passing, although the economy has yet to return to positive growth. Investors and policymakers will now be watching upcoming quarters for confirmation that this easing trend can transition into a sustained recovery in Romania’s GDP.
