Peru Economic Activity Slows Further in June

Peru’s economy grew 1.75% year-on-year in June 2026, slightly below the 1.8% expansion recorded in May and marking the slowest pace since November 2025. The sharpest decline was in the fishing sector, which contracted 51.9% following an even steeper 73.1% drop in the previous month, as warmer surface waters associated with the El Niño phenomenon pushed fish into deeper areas. Agriculture also weakened, falling 8.1% after edging up 0.1% in May. Growth in mining and hydrocarbons swung into negative territory, with a 2.2% contraction following a 2.6% increase previously, while the decline in manufacturing moderated to 6.2% from 10.7%. Partially offsetting these setbacks, activity strengthened in several sectors: commerce growth accelerated to 7.8% from 6.9%, construction to 9% from 4.7%, and utilities to 6.8% from 5.2%. Over the first half of 2026, the economy expanded 3.05%, and growth for the 12 months through June reached 3.33%.
