Foreign Investment in Canadian Securities Surges

Foreign investors increased their holdings of Canadian securities by C$40.8 billion in June 2026, a sharp rise from C$8.8 billion in May and well above market expectations of C$15 billion. The surge was driven primarily by robust demand for debt securities, which totaled C$39.9 billion. Federal government debt accounted for the bulk of this gain, with non-resident investors purchasing C$25.4 billion. In addition, non-residents acquired C$16.2 billion of private corporate bonds, mainly issues from Canadian chartered banks denominated in US dollars and euros.

Foreign investors also bought C$901 million of Canadian equities in June, following divestments of C$16.1 billion in May. By sector, they focused on manufacturing shares, partially offset by selling in the trade and transportation, and finance and insurance sectors. Overall, foreign investors acquired a record C$100.6 billion of Canadian securities in the second quarter.
