NZX 50 Falls, but Poised for 3rd Weekly Gain

New Zealand shares edged down 18 points, or 0.1%, to 13,901 in Friday morning trade, extending the previous session’s losses as investors tracked a weak overnight lead from Wall Street amid rising US Treasury yields. The pullback was largely driven by declines in healthcare, materials, and industrial stocks, while gains in consumer staples, technology, and real estate helped limit the overall fall.

Market participants were also looking ahead to key data releases, including US July PMIs and New Zealand’s Q2 retail sales figures due next week. On the domestic data front, New Zealand’s trade deficit widened in July, with exports increasing by less than imports.

Notable early decliners included Fisher & Paykel (-1.1%), F&C Investment (-0.7%), EBOS Group (-0.6%), Mercury NZ (-0.6%), and Freightways Group (-0.5%). Despite Friday’s softness, the benchmark index still gained 0.3% for the week, logging its third consecutive weekly advance.
