Japan Factory Activity Growth Hits 4-Month High

The S&P Global Japan Manufacturing PMI rose to 55.1 in August 2026 from 54.5 in July, marking an eighth consecutive month of expansion in factory activity. This was the strongest pace of growth in the manufacturing sector since April, supported by the fastest increase in new orders since January 2018, alongside the sharpest rise in overseas sales since early 2018. Employment also continued to grow solidly.

Purchasing activity increased in line with higher production needs, while inventories edged up as supplier delivery times lengthened further. On the cost side, input prices climbed, driven by more expensive raw materials, fuel, and labor, a weaker yen, and higher energy costs associated with the conflict in the Middle East. In turn, firms raised output prices at a rapid rate.

Business confidence strengthened, underpinned by expectations of higher future sales, increased operating capacity, and improved market conditions.
