Sweden Trade Surplus Narrows Sharply in July

Sweden’s trade surplus narrowed to SEK 1.2 billion in July 2026, down from SEK 3.5 billion in the same month a year earlier, as import growth outpaced exports. Imports rose 5.7% year-on-year to SEK 158.7 billion, driven by higher purchases from both EU countries (up 5.8% to SEK 106.4 billion) and non-EU countries (up 5.7% to SEK 52.3 billion). Exports increased 4.1% to SEK 159.9 billion, as a 12% rise in shipments to EU countries, to SEK 85.9 billion, offset a 3.8% decline in exports to non-EU countries, to SEK 74.0 billion.

Over the first seven months of the year, Sweden posted a trade surplus of SEK 8.5 billion, sharply lower than the SEK 51.4 billion recorded in the same period a year earlier, as imports grew 7.3%, outstripping the 3.4% increase in exports. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the trade balance showed a surplus of SEK 2.8 billion in July, compared with SEK 2.6 billion in June.
