Germany's GfK Consumer Climate Indicator improved to -26.6 heading into September 2026, up from a revised -29.4 in August. This was the least pessimistic reading since March and outperformed expectations for a further decline to -29.6.
The upswing was driven mainly by significantly stronger income expectations, which surged 16.2 points to 1.7—their highest level in six months—as households grew more optimistic about their personal financial outlook. Economic expectations also rose for the fourth consecutive month, gaining 2.4 points to -3.9. This was supported by Germany’s economy expanding by 0.3% in Q2, above the initial estimate of 0.2%, although overall economic sentiment remained more than six points below its level a year earlier.
By contrast, consumers’ willingness to buy was largely stable at -9.8, hovering around the -10-point mark for roughly four years and signaling ongoing hesitancy toward major purchases. Willingness to save dipped slightly by 1.5 points to 15.5 but remained at a very elevated level. Meanwhile, price expectations turned positive, rising to 0.2 from -2.1.
