Australia’s construction sector showed a marked improvement in August 2026, with the AIG Construction Index rising to -6.9 from a deeply negative -40.6 recorded in July 2026. The latest data, updated on 1 September 2026, point to a significant easing in the pace of contraction, even though the index remains in negative territory.
The sharp move higher from July’s level suggests that conditions in the construction industry, while still challenging, have become considerably less severe. The less negative reading may indicate that some segments of the sector are stabilising, or that the sharp downturn seen earlier is beginning to moderate.
While the index has yet to cross into positive territory, which would signal expansion, the August figures will likely be watched closely by investors and policymakers as a potential early sign that the worst of the sector’s recent weakness may be passing.
