FX.co ★ German Car Registrations Rise as EV Demand Surges

In August 2026, new passenger car registrations in Germany increased by 2.6% year-on-year to 212,563 units. Private registrations rose sharply, climbing 16.9% and accounting for 40.5% of the total market, while commercial registrations declined by 5.3%, representing 59.4%.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) showed the strongest momentum, with registrations surging 75.1% to 68,930 units and lifting their market share to 32.4%. In contrast, gasoline-powered cars saw registrations drop by 37.9%, reducing their share to 16.7%, while diesel registrations fell 17.3%, bringing their share down to 10.6%.

Over the first eight months of 2026, total new car registrations reached 1.97 million units, an increase of 4.8% compared with the same period a year earlier.
