Irish GDP Slide Eases Sharply in Q2, Signaling Possible Stabilisation

Ireland’s economy showed signs of stabilisation in the second quarter of 2026, as the year-over-year decline in gross domestic product (GDP) narrowed significantly. According to data updated on 4 September 2026, GDP contracted by 0.4% in Q2 2026 compared with the same quarter a year earlier, a marked improvement from the previously reported 13.2% year-on-year drop.

Both the current and previous readings refer to the second quarter of 2026, but the latest figure reflects an updated assessment of Ireland’s economic performance. The revision from a steep double-digit contraction to a marginal decline suggests that earlier estimates may have overstated the severity of the downturn, or that subsequent data releases and revisions have painted a less negative picture.

On a year-over-year basis, the “actual” figure now compares the Q2 2026 economy with Q2 2025, while the earlier “previous” estimate did the same. The sharp upward revision in the annual rate hints at more resilient activity than initially thought, and will likely influence economic forecasts and policy discussions as analysts reassess the underlying strength of the Irish economy going into the second half of 2026.
