Japan’s External Demand Edges Higher in Q2, Signaling Slight Boost to Growth

Japan’s GDP external demand component in the second quarter of 2026 strengthened modestly, with the indicator rising to 0.5% quarter-over-quarter, up from 0.3% in the previous quarter. The updated figures, released on 7 September 2026, suggest that foreign demand provided a slightly stronger contribution to Japan’s overall economic performance during the period.

The comparison is made on a quarter-over-quarter basis, with the current 0.5% reading reflecting the change in external demand from the first to the second quarter of 2026. The previous 0.3% figure represented the change from the fourth quarter of the prior period to the first quarter of 2026. Although the improvement is incremental, the uptick points to firmer support from exports and net trade as part of Japan’s broader growth profile in the second quarter.
