Mongolia Trade Surplus Hits Record High

Mongolia’s trade surplus widened to USD 978.3 million in August 2026, up from USD 408.51 million in the same month a year earlier. Exports surged 55.8% year-on-year to USD 2,194.2 million, while imports grew at a more moderate pace of 21.6% to USD 1,215.8 million.

Over the January–August period, exports rose 57.2% to USD 14,400.1 million, largely driven by stronger shipments of mineral products (up 61.1%), led in particular by bituminous coal (57.9%) and copper ores and concentrates (82.6%). China remained Mongolia’s dominant export market, absorbing 92.7% of total exports, with Switzerland in second place at 4.7%.

During the same period, imports increased 11.9% to USD 8,373.6 million, supported mainly by higher purchases of mineral products (up 35.7%), especially oil products (35.3%). Imports of machinery, equipment, and electrical appliances also rose by 8.8%. China was the largest source of imports, accounting for 41.0% of the total, followed by Russia (27.5%) and Japan (9.1%).
