Swedish Inflation Confirmed at 0.3% in August

Sweden’s consumer prices increased by 0.3% year-on-year in August 2026, in line with preliminary estimates and slightly above the 0.2% rise recorded in July, which had been the lowest rate since May 2025. The uptick was mainly driven by higher costs for housing and utilities (up 2.6% versus 2.3% in July), reflecting rising rents and electricity prices. Transport inflation also accelerated (1.7% vs 0.4%), largely due to higher fuel prices, with diesel costs jumping 18%.

Prices continued to rise, though at a slightly slower pace, for alcoholic beverages and tobacco (2% vs 2.1%) and for recreation, sport, and culture (1.6% vs 1.8%). By contrast, prices fell further in several categories: food and non-alcoholic beverages (-6.6% vs -7.2%), health (-6.2% vs -6.4%), and education services (-15.5% vs -15.3%).

On a monthly basis, consumer prices declined by 0.3% in August, matching the pace of the previous month. Meanwhile, the consumer price index with a fixed interest rate (CPIF), the Riksbank’s preferred inflation gauge, rose 0.7% year-on-year—its lowest level since December 2020—and fell 0.3% month-on-month in August.
