US Business Inventories Jump 0.8% in July, Marking Sharp Acceleration From June

U.S. business inventories rose 0.8% month-over-month in July 2026, a marked acceleration from the modest 0.1% increase recorded in June, according to data updated on 16 September 2026. The figures reflect a stronger buildup of stockpiles across businesses compared with the previous month.

On a month-over-month comparison basis, the July reading shows that companies expanded their inventories at a significantly faster pace than they did in June, when the rate of change was nearly flat. The previous indicator, measuring June 2026 against May, had effectively plateaued at 0.1%, highlighting the contrast with July’s more robust 0.8% gain.

The data suggest a notable shift in inventory management strategies between early and mid-summer, as the “Actual” July result is measured against June levels, while the “Previous” June reading reflects changes relative to May. Market participants will now be watching whether this faster inventory accumulation persists in the coming months or proves to be a one-off adjustment.
