The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which measures shipping rates for vessels transporting dry bulk commodities, fell for a fifth consecutive session on Wednesday, slipping about 1% to 3,327 points—its lowest level since September 1. The capesize index, reflecting rates for ships that typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, declined 1.3% to 5,612 points. The panamax index, which covers vessels that usually transport 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, fell 1.6% to 2,325 points. In contrast, the supramax index inched 0.7% higher to 1,748 points.
