The NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI), which measures U.S. homebuilder confidence in the market for newly built single-family homes, declined to 32 in September 2026—its lowest level in a year—from 35 in August, below expectations of 34. The index component for current sales conditions fell four points to 35, while sales expectations for the next six months dropped six points to 37. Traffic of prospective buyers was unchanged at 23. Additionally, 38% of builders reduced prices in September, up from 35% in August.
